A video that shows the magic art of the foley artist In recent years, Nowness, the hugely important hub for creative video making, has brought to our attention a great number of video productions that have deeply touched our emotional and sensorial sphere. They are stories created to inspire or provoke debate and at their heart is always the evocative power of images and the sounds that inspire fantasy, shock or outrage. Among this mix of incomparable visual productions, we cannot fail to mention “The Foley Artist”, a short directed by Oliver Holms. It was produced by Nowness, where it had hundreds of thousands of views in roughly a month, and it received various prizes at the last Berlin Fashion Film Festival. What makes it truly special, in our opinion, is the poetic narration that casts some light on a profession that remains a complete mystery to most people yet is fascinating in a way few others really are: the Foley Artist. This profession is quite unique, it exists somewhere between the pragmatic nature of a hardware store and the fantastical figure of a witch. Surrounded by knick-knacks that range from a selection of women’s heels to samples of every type of flooring known to man or from household items such as ladles to firearms. This job is far beyond anything the term ‘sound technician’ could ever really convey, a more appropriate term to use would be ‘sound craftsman’. The title of the short is the name of the job itself and is taken from the first person to invent it: Jack Donovan Foley (Yorkville, New York, 1891 –Los Angeles, California, 1967). Credited with inventing the process of adding sound effects, his techniques are still faithfully applied. His eureka moment was realising that everyday objects could be exploited to make an infinite myriad of sounds. The sounds and noises that we hear in the background of a film are not always directly connected to what is going on in the scene. This short reveals that the sound of a door opening might be the delicate work of a sound artist handling a gun or, light-years away from anything we could imagine, he might be mixing pasta in lots of sauce with his bare hands to simulate shampooing somebody’s hair. Alongside scenes of normal everyday life, Holms shows us some of the tricks of the trade, emphasising the creativity needed to simulate that negligible background buzz that accompanies everything we do and which in the cinema we take even more for granted. Who would ever have thought that corn starch in a leather bag would recreate the sound of snow crunching? Or that slicing a frozen lettuce would reproduce the crunch of a broken bone? Or that closing and opening an umbrella might sound like a flock of birds in flight? The secret lies in the words of John Roesch, a historic Foley artist who, in a career that spans over 30 years, has been in charge of sound for countless masterpieces such as Matrix, Inception, Back to the Future, ET and many more. He famously said, “if we’ve done our job correctly, you don’t know we’ve done it.”
